The definition (and what it isn't)

An AI headshot is a professional-looking portrait of your face generated by an AI model from a photo you upload. The model studies what you look like, then paints a new image of you in a different outfit, different lighting, different background. The face is still yours. Everything around it is new.

That's the whole trick. It is not a filter. It is not a retouch. The output photo never existed before you clicked generate. The pixels are synthetic, but the person they show is you.

And here's the catch. The output is not a photograph in the legal sense. So you can use it on LinkedIn, your website, your resume, your sales deck. You cannot use it on a passport or a driver's license. Governments want pixels that came out of a real camera. Hiring managers, recruiters, customers, and your second cousin on Facebook do not care.

How AI headshot generation actually works

Older AI headshot tools needed 10 to 30 reference photos because they fine-tuned an image model on each user's face. That training step took 30 to 120 minutes per user and cost real money. So those tools had to charge $35 to $75 to break even.

AI headshot vs a real photographer

A professional headshot session in 2026 runs $200 to $600 in most US cities. New York and San Francisco push higher. You book a day, drive there, sit through a 45-minute session, wait two weeks for the edits, then pay extra if you want more than three usable photos.

But here's the honest version. A photographer captures something a model never will. They watch your microexpressions, they joke with you, they coach you through awkward smiles. Why do some AI headshots look weird, and why ours don't

The plastic face problem is real. You've seen it. Overly smooth skin. Eyes that look like they are made of glass. A jaw that drifts a few millimeters off your actual jaw. The kind of photo where you can tell something is off even if you can't say what.

Three things cause it. First, cheap tools apply heavy smoothing to hide model artifacts, which kills natural skin texture. Second, weak identity preservation means the model wanders away from your actual face mid-generation. Third, no post-processing means the raw diffusion output ships as-is, which always looks a little dreamy.

We address all three. The post-processing pass preserves pores, hair, fabric weave. The prompt holds your identity tight across all 100 outputs and explicitly forbids slimming, smoothing, or beautifying your face. And every single image is checked against the source photo before delivery. The ones that drift too far get rejected, regenerated, replaced.

Are the results perfect? No. About 1 in 50 outputs comes out a little off (slightly wrong jaw, weird ear, a hand that should not be there). What happens to your photos

This part matters and we get asked about it constantly. So here's the full story.

Your upload is encrypted in transit (TLS 1.3) and processed in memory only — never written to disk, never persisted to storage. The bytes exist for the few seconds your generation runs, then they're released when the function returns. We don't keep them, we don't ship them anywhere else, and there's no 24-hour window or any window — the source photo never hits durable storage at all. Your generated headshots, on the other hand, are encrypted at rest in your private account gallery so you can re-download them anytime, with signed-URL access tied to your session. You can delete any of them — or your whole gallery — from your dashboard.

We do not train any AI model on your face. We never have. We never will. The model we run, Google Gemini 2.5 Flash Image, was built and trained by Google long before you uploaded anything. We are a thin layer on top of it, and your selfie is never added to any training set.

We do not share your photos with any third party. The only company that ever sees the bytes is Google, whose Gemini model performs the generation. We send the photo for your generation request only, then it's gone from our side.

Why $19 once, not $9 a month

Headshots are not a monthly need. Most people refresh their profile photo once a year. Some never. Charging a monthly subscription for that would be predatory, full stop.

So we picked a one-time price that covers our compute cost (about $0.20 per Premium pack), pays for the infrastructure, and leaves enough margin to keep the lights on without ads or data sales. The math works because most people will not need a refresh for 12 months, and by then they may want to upgrade to a new style.

If you only need the 3 free samples and you never come back, that's fine too. The free tier costs us about $0.012 per user. We are not crying about it.

What we will not do, ever

We do not build face swap. We do not build undress or removal filters. We do not let users generate headshots of someone who is not themselves, since the whole pipeline only works with the person whose face was uploaded.

We do not generate outputs of minors for any commercial or stylized purpose. We do not store biometric identifiers. We do not run face recognition or matching as a service.

We picked AI headshots specifically because it is one of the safer, cleaner use cases of generative face tech. The user is generating images of themselves, for themselves, with their consent baked into the upload. Everyone in the loop is the same person. We like that math.

Where AI headshots are going next

Three things will change in the next 18 months. First, real-time generation. Right now we take 60 seconds. By 2027 that drops to under 10. Second, video headshots — a 3-second loop instead of a still — will become standard for LinkedIn and personal sites. Third, identity-aware retouching where you can ask the AI to tweak something specific (a slightly different angle, a brighter background) without regenerating from scratch.
