The short version

Quick answers, no marketing fluff.

What is FreeHeadshot?

FreeHeadshot is a free AI headshot generator. You upload one selfie, pick a style, and get 3 professional studio-quality headshots in 60 seconds. No signup, no credit card. Premium upgrade is $19 one-time for 100 HD photos across 100+ styles.

How does FreeHeadshot compare to Aragon, HeadshotPro, and BetterPic?

Aragon starts at $35, HeadshotPro at $29, BetterPic at $35. All require 10 to 30 reference photos and 30 to 120 minutes of model training. FreeHeadshot starts at $0, needs 1 photo, and finishes in 60 seconds. Premium is $19 one-time, not a subscription.

Are AI headshots safe to use on LinkedIn?

Yes. LinkedIn has no policy that bans AI-generated profile photos. FreeHeadshot outputs are designed for LinkedIn, company team pages, resumes, sales decks, and email signatures. They are not valid for passports or government ID, which require unedited photographs.

How does FreeHeadshot keep my photos private?

Your source photo is processed in memory only — never written to disk, never stored. It exists for the few seconds your generation runs, then it's gone. We never extract face embeddings, never train AI on user photos, and never share photos with any third party. Your generated headshots are saved to your private account gallery (encrypted, signed-URL access only) so you can re-download them anytime; delete any of them — or your whole gallery — from your dashboard. Full policy at freeheadshot.org/privacy.

Why does FreeHeadshot only need one photo when competitors need 30?

Most AI headshot tools fine-tune a model on each user's face, which requires 10 to 30 reference photos. FreeHeadshot runs on Google Gemini 2.5 Flash Image, a multimodal model that reads your single selfie directly and renders the new headshot from it. No per-user training step is needed, which is why one photo is enough.

What does the $19 Premium tier actually include?

100 AI headshots across 100+ styles (Corporate, LinkedIn, Executive, Old Money, Editorial, Cyberpunk, and many more), Full HD resolution, no watermark, full commercial license, downloadable as individual PNGs or one ZIP archive, plus a 24-hour refund window if you've used 3 or fewer photos. One-time charge, never auto-renews.

How it works

Three steps. Sixty seconds.

No photography skills. No scheduling. No leaving your couch.

01

Upload

Drop one clear selfie. That's it. Mirror photo, ID photo, whatever — as long as your face is visible.

02

Choose style

Pick from 100+ styles across Professional, Old Money, Editorial, Themed, Aesthetic, Era, Cultural, and Age.

03

Download

60 seconds later, get 3 free headshots. Upgrade to 50 HD photos in all styles for $19 one time.

Built different

Eight things we got right.

Every feature here exists because the standard AI headshot tools got it wrong first.

1 photo, not 30

Most AI headshot tools need 10 to 30 reference photos and 30 to 120 minutes of model training. FreeHeadshot runs on Google Gemini 2.5 Flash Image, which reads one selfie directly, so a single photo is enough. The whole process finishes in about 60 seconds.

60-second output

Free pack: 3 finished headshots in about 60 seconds. Premium pack: up to 300 photos across 100+ styles, ready in minutes. No waiting room. No email when it's done. You stay on the page, the photos appear.

Real studio quality

We post-process every output to preserve pores, hair strands, fabric weave, and lighting detail. The plastic AI face problem comes from skipping this step. We don't skip it.

100+ styles, real range

Professional, Editorial, Themed, Era, Cultural, and Age categories — from boardroom Corporate to Vintage Hollywood, Cyberpunk, Mad Men, Persian Qajar, and You at 70. Each prompt is written in photography vocabulary so the look actually lands.

Actually free

3 headshots, no signup, no credit card, no email gate. Most 'free' AI tools cap you at a demo or push you to a paid plan after one try. We don't. The free tier is the product, not the bait.

$19 once, never a subscription

Premium is $19 one-time. Not $19 a month. Not $19 a year. Not a free trial that turns into $19. You buy it, you own the 100 photos, you walk away. 24-hour refund window if you don't love your first batch (3-photo quality check).

Selfie never stored

Your source photo is processed in memory only — never written to disk, never stored. We don't extract face embeddings or train AI on user photos. Your generated headshots are saved to your private account gallery, encrypted and signed-URL-only, and you can delete any of them anytime.

Full commercial license

Premium outputs come with a no-questions commercial license. Use them on your website, your sales deck, your product packaging, your paid ads, your magazine cover. They're yours. We retain zero copyright in your photos.

The long version

What is an AI headshot, really?

We get a lot of the same questions. So here's everything in one place, with no marketing fog. If you want the short version, the FAQ at the bottom covers the highlights. If you want the real story, keep reading.

The definition (and what it isn't)

An AI headshot is a professional-looking portrait of your face generated by an AI model from a photo you upload. The model studies what you look like, then paints a new image of you in a different outfit, different lighting, different background. The face is still yours. Everything around it is new.

That's the whole trick. It is not a filter. It is not a retouch. The output photo never existed before you clicked generate. The pixels are synthetic, but the person they show is you.

And here's the catch. The output is not a photograph in the legal sense. So you can use it on LinkedIn, your website, your resume, your sales deck. You cannot use it on a passport or a driver's license. Governments want pixels that came out of a real camera. Hiring managers, recruiters, customers, and your second cousin on Facebook do not care.

How AI headshot generation actually works

Older AI headshot tools needed 10 to 30 reference photos because they fine-tuned an image model on each user's face. That training step took 30 to 120 minutes per user and cost real money. So those tools had to charge $35 to $75 to break even.

FreeHeadshot runs on Google Gemini 2.5 Flash Image. Instead of fine-tuning a model on you, Gemini reads your single selfie directly as visual context and renders a brand-new headshot conditioned on it. No model ever gets retrained on your face. The whole process takes seconds, not hours. One photo is enough because the model reads your features straight from the image.

Then we run the output through a post-processing pass that preserves skin texture, hair detail, and lighting: tone grading, a touch of micro-grain, and a saliency-aware crop. That step is why our outputs do not look like the plasticky AI faces you may have seen from cheaper tools. The post-processing is what most people skip.

Who actually uses AI headshots

Job seekers update their LinkedIn photo when the old one starts feeling stale. Sales reps refresh their email signature before a big quarter. Founders need a new bio photo for a fundraising announcement. Remote teams onboard new hires across 30 time zones and want a consistent look on the team page.

Conference speakers need a square crop. Podcast hosts need a press kit shot. Real estate agents need a friendly portrait that reads warm at the size of a postcard. We see all of them, every single day.

The one group we cannot help: anyone who needs the photo to legally represent them in a government context. Skip us, go to a passport place. It's faster than you think.

AI headshot vs a real photographer

A professional headshot session in 2026 runs $200 to $600 in most US cities. New York and San Francisco push higher. You book a day, drive there, sit through a 45-minute session, wait two weeks for the edits, then pay extra if you want more than three usable photos.

An AI headshot from FreeHeadshot is $0 for 3 samples or $19 for 100 across 100+ styles. The whole thing takes 60 seconds. You do it from your couch in pajamas. Nobody sees you sweat.

But here's the honest version. A photographer captures something a model never will. They watch your microexpressions, they joke with you, they coach you through awkward smiles. The final photo has a warmth that comes from a real person paying attention to you for an hour. AI cannot do that yet. And it might never.

So when do you pay the $400? When the photo has to land. CEO bio for the annual report. Cover shot for a magazine. A new investor deck where every detail matters. For everything else (which is most things), the AI version gets you 90% of the way there for 5% of the price.

We dig into this trade-off with real numbers in our cost breakdown by city.

Why do some AI headshots look weird, and why ours don't

The plastic face problem is real. You've seen it. Overly smooth skin. Eyes that look like they are made of glass. A jaw that drifts a few millimeters off your actual jaw. The kind of photo where you can tell something is off even if you can't say what.

Three things cause it. First, cheap tools apply heavy smoothing to hide model artifacts, which kills natural skin texture. Second, weak identity preservation means the model wanders away from your actual face mid-generation. Third, no post-processing means the raw diffusion output ships as-is, which always looks a little dreamy.

We address all three. The post-processing pass preserves pores, hair, fabric weave. The prompt holds your identity tight across all 100 outputs and explicitly forbids slimming, smoothing, or beautifying your face. And every single image is checked against the source photo before delivery. The ones that drift too far get rejected, regenerated, replaced.

Are the results perfect? No. About 1 in 50 outputs comes out a little off (slightly wrong jaw, weird ear, a hand that should not be there). The Premium pack gives you 100 so even with that 2% rate you have around 98 usable photos. That's more than any human photographer will hand you in a single session.

What happens to your photos

This part matters and we get asked about it constantly. So here's the full story.

Your upload is encrypted in transit (TLS 1.3) and processed in memory only — never written to disk, never persisted to storage. The bytes exist for the few seconds your generation runs, then they're released when the function returns. We don't keep them, we don't ship them anywhere else, and there's no 24-hour window or any window — the source photo never hits durable storage at all. Your generated headshots, on the other hand, are encrypted at rest in your private account gallery so you can re-download them anytime, with signed-URL access tied to your session. You can delete any of them — or your whole gallery — from your dashboard.

We do not train any AI model on your face. We never have. We never will. The model we run, Google Gemini 2.5 Flash Image, was built and trained by Google long before you uploaded anything. We are a thin layer on top of it, and your selfie is never added to any training set.

We do not share your photos with any third party. The only company that ever sees the bytes is Google, whose Gemini model performs the generation. We send the photo for your generation request only, then it's gone from our side.

Full policy in plain English here.

Why $19 once, not $9 a month

Headshots are not a monthly need. Most people refresh their profile photo once a year. Some never. Charging a monthly subscription for that would be predatory, full stop.

So we picked a one-time price that covers our compute cost (about $0.20 per Premium pack), pays for the infrastructure, and leaves enough margin to keep the lights on without ads or data sales. The math works because most people will not need a refresh for 12 months, and by then they may want to upgrade to a new style.

If you only need the 3 free samples and you never come back, that's fine too. The free tier costs us about $0.012 per user. We are not crying about it.

What we will not do, ever

We do not build face swap. We do not build undress or removal filters. We do not let users generate headshots of someone who is not themselves, since the whole pipeline only works with the person whose face was uploaded.

We do not generate outputs of minors for any commercial or stylized purpose. We do not store biometric identifiers. We do not run face recognition or matching as a service.

We picked AI headshots specifically because it is one of the safer, cleaner use cases of generative face tech. The user is generating images of themselves, for themselves, with their consent baked into the upload. Everyone in the loop is the same person. We like that math.

How we stack up against the rest

Aragon.ai is the big name. They charge $35 to $75, need 6 to 12 photos, take 30 minutes to 2 hours. Great quality when it works, frustrating refund flow when it does not. Full comparison here.

HeadshotPro is the second-most-cited. $29 to $59. Built for teams. Solid B2B story. Compared here.

BetterPic markets 200+ outputs. The trade-off is the plastic look that comes from over-retouching. Comparison here.

Magicshot is the subscription one. $9.99 a month. A year of that is $120, vs $19 once with us. Math here.

The rest (Secta Labs, Dreamwave, ProfileBakery, StudioShot) all cluster around $25 to $50 with their own quirks. We cover each of them in the vs pages.

Where AI headshots are going next

Three things will change in the next 18 months. First, real-time generation. Right now we take 60 seconds. By 2027 that drops to under 10. Second, video headshots — a 3-second loop instead of a still — will become standard for LinkedIn and personal sites. Third, identity-aware retouching where you can ask the AI to tweak something specific (a slightly different angle, a brighter background) without regenerating from scratch.

We're building toward all three. The team pack pricing ships first (Q3 2026), then a B2B API for HR platforms and ATS systems (Q4), then real-time and video sometime in 2027. Roadmap details are on our about page.
