Background Remover for Headshots

A free browser-based background remover that strips the background out of a headshot in 5 to 15 seconds, runs entirely on your device with WebAssembly, and outputs a transparent PNG. The image never leaves your browser, so no upload, no account, and no watermark.

What this background remover does

It runs a lightweight portrait-segmentation model entirely in your browser via WebAssembly. Each pixel is classified as foreground (you) or background (everything else), with an alpha-soft mask around the edges so hair and glasses don't look cut out with scissors. The result is a transparent-cutout PNG that you can flatten onto any solid color or leave alpha-transparent.

Why browser-side instead of server-side

Server-side background removers (Remove.bg, Pixelcut) upload your photo to their cloud, run a bigger model, and meter you per image at $0.50 to $2.00. The result is marginally cleaner around hair edges. The trade-off is privacy and cost. Browser-side gets you the same model class on your own device, free, with no upload — and for the 95% of headshots that have decent contrast against the background, the result is indistinguishable.

Best backgrounds for different use cases

  • LinkedIn / corporate website: Solid navy (#0F1B2D) or studio gray (#B8B8B8). Avoid pure black — it crushes detail in dark hair and clothing.
  • US passport / Green Card: Pure white (#FFFFFF) or off-white (#F5F1EA). Use the Passport Photo Maker for the gov-published head-size band on top.
  • UK passport: Light-coloured background — cream (#F4F1E8) is safest. The UK explicitly disallows pure white.
  • German Bewerbungsfoto: Studio gray (#EFEFEF). Pure white is fine on most resumes but gray feels more "biometric."
  • Slack / Notion / Email signature: Transparent PNG. Lets the platform's own background show through.
  • Press kit / podcast: Black (#0A0A0A) with the JPG export for a high-contrast author photo.

Privacy details

The image bytes are loaded into an in-memory canvas, passed to the WebAssembly model, and the result is held in memory until you download or close the tab. Nothing is sent to FreeHeadshot or to any third party. No model telemetry, no per-image analytics. Closing the browser tab destroys everything.

When the AI Studio is the better answer

Background removal is a fix — it papers over a bad background. If the lighting, pose, or framing is also off, fixing only the background still leaves a meh headshot. The AI Studio generates a fresh studio-quality photo from one selfie in about 60 seconds. Free for the first 3 photos, $19 once for 100 photos across 100+ styles. No subscription.

Questions, answered

Background Remover for Headshots — frequently asked questions

Does this background remover upload my photo?

No. The model runs entirely in your browser using WebAssembly. The image bytes never leave your device. There is no signup, no account, no watermark.

Why does the first run take longer?

The first time you use the tool, your browser downloads the ONNX background-removal model (about 30 MB). After that, the model is cached and runs in 3-8 seconds per photo.

Is the cutout transparent?

Yes. The PNG export keeps full alpha transparency around the subject. The JPG export bakes in whichever solid color you picked.

Does it work well on hair and edges?

For most well-lit headshots, yes. The model is trained on portrait segmentation and handles hair, glasses, and clothing edges cleanly. Frizzy hair against a busy background is the hardest case.

Is it as good as Remove.bg or Photoshop?

For typical headshots, very close. Remove.bg uses a server-side model with slightly better edge refinement, but you upload your photo and pay per image. This tool is free, local, and good enough for 95% of use cases.

What's the maximum image size I can use?

Twelve megabytes. Larger photos slow the segmentation step. For best speed, drop the image into our Image Compressor first if it's over 6 MB.

What backgrounds work for a passport photo?

White or off-white satisfies US passport rules; light-coloured (cream) satisfies UK; ID gray satisfies most EU countries. For strict head-height enforcement use the Passport Photo Maker — it crops to the gov-published head ratio.

Can I use this for a transparent avatar?

Yes. PNG export keeps transparency, which is what you want for Slack, Notion, email signatures, and team-page avatars on dark backgrounds.
