Quick answer
A good AI headshot keeps your curl pattern, volume and shape exactly as they are in your selfie. The most common failure is straightening: type 3 and 4 curls come back as waves or a sleek blowout. To get it right, shoot the selfie with your hair as you wear it to work, in soft front light, with the whole shape of your hair in frame, and use a style that locks hair texture. Our Natural Curls Studio does, and so do our other styles.

AI Headshots for Curly and Coily Hair: Six Looks With the Curls Kept, and the Failure to Watch For
Ask women with curly or coily hair about AI headshots and the same complaint comes up: the curls come back straightened. Type 4 coils turn into loose waves, a full afro gets cropped into a neat bob shape, braids and locs blur. It happens because many models learned what "professional hair" looks like from a narrow set of images. This page shows what it looks like when a tool keeps the hair, and what the failure looks like so you can spot it.
The starting selfie, six looks, and one failure
All the photos below come from one phone selfie of a fictional woman with type 4 coily hair worn out in a full afro.

In all six the coil pattern, the volume and the rounded shape match the selfie. Now the failure:

Same woman, same jacket, and a different person. The straightened version is what many tools return by default. If you get a result like this, do not use it, and do not pay for more from the same tool.
What a tool must keep
| Hair | What "kept" means |
|---|---|
| Coils (type 4) | Same tight pattern, same density, same shape; no loosening into waves |
| Curls (type 3) | Same ringlet size and definition; no blowout |
| Waves (type 2) | Same wave, not flattened straight, not over curled |
| Afro | Full shape and volume, not cropped or compressed at the top of the frame |
| Braids, twists, locs | Same parts, same thickness, same length |
| Protective styles and wraps | Kept exactly as worn |
| Color | Natural or dyed, exactly as in the selfie |
Our studio's hard rules keep hair texture and shape across every photographic style. Natural Curls Studio goes further: soft diffused light that shows curl definition, a rim light that separates the hair from the backdrop, and framing with room above the hair so no volume is cut off.
How to shoot the selfie so the curls survive
- Wear your hair the way you wear it to work. The studio copies what it sees. If you want the afro, shoot the afro.
- Get all of it in frame. Hold the phone far enough away that the top and sides of your hair are visible. A crop through the hair tells the model the hair ends there.
- Face soft light. A window in front of you shows curl definition. Overhead light flattens it and casts shadows under the eyes.
- Avoid a busy background. Dark hair against a dark, cluttered room loses its outline. A plain light wall is ideal.
- No filters. Phone beauty modes smooth hair texture as well as skin.
Colors and backdrops for curly hair
- Dark hair on dark backdrops loses its shape. Use cream, light grey or white, or ask for a rim light (our Executive and Natural Curls looks add one).
- Big hair on a busy office backdrop can blend into it. A softly blurred, light background keeps the silhouette.
- Jewel tones such as cobalt, emerald and mustard flatter deep skin tones and keep their color in a small LinkedIn circle.
What the research says about natural hair at work
This is not only an aesthetic preference. It is documented.
| Study | Finding |
|---|---|
| Koval and Rosette, Social Psychological and Personality Science, 2020 | Across four studies, Black women with natural hairstyles were rated less professional and less competent, and were less likely to be recommended for interview, than Black women with straightened hair and white women with curly or straight hair. The effect was stronger in industries with strict dress norms |
| CROWN Workplace Research Study, Dove and LinkedIn, 2023 | Black women's hair was 2.5 times more likely to be perceived as unprofessional. About two thirds (66%) of Black women changed their hair for a job interview, and 41% of those changed it from curly to straight |
In the US, more than half of the states have passed a version of the CROWN Act, which bans discrimination based on hair texture and protective styles; there is no federal version in force. The law is catching up. A headshot tool should not be the thing that pushes you back.
The point for a headshot is simple. The decision to wear your hair natural, straightened, braided or wrapped is yours. A tool that straightens curls is making that decision for you, in the one context where research shows it carries weight.
Natural curls and the 100 millisecond judgment
People form an impression of competence and trustworthiness from a face in about 100 milliseconds, according to Willis and Todorov (2006). What helps in that window is a well lit face, a natural expression and a clean silhouette, and all three are compatible with any hair texture. Curls do not need to be tamed to read as professional; they need light that shows them and a frame that does not cut them off.
The bottom line
Your headshot should show your hair the way people see it at work. Keep the whole shape in frame, use soft front light, pick a light or softly blurred backdrop, and reject any result that straightens, loosens or crops your curls. With a free first set, you can check that before paying anyone.
FAQ
Why do AI headshot generators straighten curly hair? Many models learned what professional hair looks like from images where straight and blown out hair dominate. Without a rule to keep texture, they drift toward it. Our studio has a hard rule to keep hair texture and shape in every photographic style.
What is the best AI headshot style for curly hair? Our Natural Curls Studio: soft diffused light that shows curl definition, a rim light that separates the hair from the backdrop, and framing with room above the hair. Soft Studio Cream and Jewel Tone Studio also work well.
How should I take a selfie for an AI headshot with an afro? Wear your hair as you wear it to work, hold the phone far enough away that the whole shape is in frame, face a window for soft light, stand in front of a plain light wall and turn off beauty filters.
Do AI headshots keep braids and locs? They should. Ours keeps braids, twists, locs and protective styles exactly as in the selfie, including parts, thickness and length. Reject any result that blurs or restyles them.
Is natural hair professional for a headshot? Yes. Research shows some evaluators are biased against natural hair, which is the evaluator's problem, not the hair's. More than half of US states now ban hair discrimination through versions of the CROWN Act.
What background color suits dark curly hair? Cream, light grey or white, so the outline of the hair stays visible. On a dark backdrop, ask for a rim light that separates the hair from the background.
Can I try this for free? Yes. The first set of three headshots is free with no signup, so you can check that your curls are kept before paying anything.

An AI headshot should keep curly and coily hair exactly as worn, including curl pattern, volume and shape; the 2023 CROWN Workplace Research Study found Black women's hair 2.5 times more likely to be perceived as unprofessional, and 41% of women who changed their hair for an interview went from curly to straight.
