Quick answer

The safest professional headshot for most women is a soft studio or window light portrait in a solid mid or jewel tone, framed chest up, with a natural smile and your real skin, hair and age kept. Navy blazer on grey still works for law and finance, but it is one option of twelve, not the default. Below, the same woman is shown in all twelve looks so you can compare them side by side and pick by job, not by habit.

Professional Headshots for Women: 12 Looks, One Face, What Each One Says

Every photo on this page shows the same fictional woman, generated from one ordinary kitchen selfie. Only the look changes, so you are comparing looks, not faces.

The starting point: one phone selfie in a kitchen
The starting selfie: phone, kitchen, daylight

The short answer: which look for which job

Most women are handed one headshot template, the navy blazer on a grey wall, and told it is "professional". It is one of twelve looks that work, and for many jobs it is not the best one. The table pairs each look with what it signals and where it fits.

The 12 looks, side by side

Studio looks

Soft Studio Cream: cream blazer, camel knit, cream backdrop
1. Soft Studio Cream
Classic Corporate: navy blazer, white blouse, grey backdrop
3. Classic Corporate
Jewel Tone Studio: cobalt top on grey
7. Jewel Tone Studio
Black and white portrait in a black turtleneck
9. Black and White

Studio looks control everything except you. Soft Studio Cream uses one large soft light from the front, which fills in the small shadows under the eyes and along the jaw without smoothing the skin itself. Her freckles are all still there. Classic Corporate is the grey wall look; it is fine, and it is the right call when every other partner on a law firm page already has one. Jewel Tone Studio is the one that survives the LinkedIn circle best: one saturated solid color still reads at thumbnail size in a feed, where navy on grey turns into a dark blob. Black and White removes color as a variable entirely, which is why academics and architects lean on it.

Office and outdoor looks

Window Light Office: emerald blouse, bright office
2. Window Light Office
Outdoor: trench coat on a tree lined street
8. Outdoor Natural Light
Approachable casual: chambray shirt, bright office
12. Approachable Casual
Seated lean at an oak table
6. Lean In (photographer version, seated)

Window Light Office drops the blazer entirely and lets a colored blouse do the work. The daylight comes from one side, which gives the face shape that flat studio light does not. Outdoor Natural Light is shot in open shade, never direct sun, which is why her eyes are open and there are no hard shadows under the nose. Approachable Casual is the tech company look: a real smile with teeth and a shirt you would actually wear on a Tuesday. Lean In puts her slightly closer to the camera than her shoulders, the same body language as someone listening across a table.

Pose led looks

Confident stance with arms crossed on white
4. Confident Stance (photographer version, arms crossed)
Over the shoulder on charcoal
5. Over the Shoulder
Creative brand: rust knit against a plaster wall
10. Creative Brand
Executive look in charcoal on a dark backdrop
11. Executive

These four are carried by posture and mood more than clothing. Confident Stance is square shoulders, level chin, steady gaze. A photographer would often add crossed arms; our studio keeps hands out of frame (AI hands are still a common failure point in generated portraits), so the style carries the same authority through the shoulders alone. Over the Shoulder turns the body away and the face back, the oldest portrait pose there is. Creative Brand is the one to pick if your headshot sits on a shop website or a book jacket rather than an org chart. Executive uses a darker backdrop and a single directional light, which adds weight without a power suit.

Why women's headshots go wrong

Three failures show up again and again, and none of them is about the woman in the photo.

1. The template was built for men. Most "corporate" presets describe a navy suit, a grey wall and loop lighting, then swap "shirt" for "blouse" when the subject is a woman. The result reads as a bank brochure because it was designed as one. You can see the difference in the grid above: the same woman reads more senior in Window Light Office than in Classic Corporate.

2. Beauty drift. Many generators were trained on retouched images, so they pull every woman toward the same smoothed, contoured, younger face. Here is the same woman with and without that drift.

Natural headshot that looks like her
Looks like her on a good day
The same woman after heavy beauty retouching
Beauty drift: smoothed, contoured, lashes added

The second one is not just less accurate. In the largest field test of CV photos, it is also the version that costs callbacks (see the research section below).

3. Identity rewrites. Curls straightened, grey hair colored, a hijab removed, glasses dropped. Each of these changes who the person is, and each is a reason to stop using a tool. Our studio is built to keep all four exactly as they appear in your selfie, and each has its own guide with photos: curly hair, hijab, over 50.

What the research says about women's headshots

Five studies are worth knowing before you pick a photo. Each one is linked in the sources at the bottom of this page.

FindingStudyWhat it means for your headshot
People rate competence, trust and likeability after seeing a face for 100 milliseconds, and longer viewing barely changes the ratingWillis and Todorov, Psychological Science, 2006Your photo is judged before your headline is read. Expression and light matter more than outfit details
Among 5,312 CVs sent to 2,656 real job ads, women with no photo got 16.6% callbacks, plain looking women 13.6%, attractive women 12.8%. For men it was the reverse: 19.7% for attractive menRuffle and Shtudiner, Management Science, 2015Glamour helps men and costs women. A natural, competent headshot beats a beautified one
Tilting the head slightly down while looking up into the lens raises perceived dominance, across five studies with 1,517 peopleWitkower and Tracy, Psychological Science, 2019A slightly lowered chin reads as authority; a raised chin reads as looking down on the viewer
Black women with natural hairstyles were rated less professional and less likely to be recommended for interview than Black women with straightened hairKoval and Rosette, Social Psychological and Personality Science, 2020The bias is real, and it is the evaluator's problem. A tool should never make the choice for you by straightening your hair
In 1,474 German job applications, a woman with a Turkish name got callbacks 13.5% of the time; the same woman in a headscarf got 4.2%, against 18.8% for a German nameWeichselbaumer, ILR Review, 2020Discrimination is documented. A headshot tool that removes a hijab is not neutral, it is making a decision that belongs to you

None of this says women should hide. It says the photo should look like a competent version of the real person, and that the person, not the software, decides how she presents.

How to make each look from one selfie

  1. Take one clear selfie. Daylight from a window in front of you, phone at eye level or slightly above, nothing covering your face. Wear your hair, makeup and glasses the way you actually wear them to work.
  2. Pick the look by job, not by habit. Use the table at the top. If you are not sure, Soft Studio Cream and Window Light Office are the two that suit the widest range of roles.
  3. Generate and compare. Each set gives you three versions. Pick the one where your expression looks most like you in a good meeting.
  4. Use the same photo everywhere. LinkedIn, email signature, Slack, the team page. One consistent photo is easier to recognise in person.

The women first styles in the studio

We added ten looks designed for women first. Each keeps your face, skin, hair and age exactly as they are; the look only changes the clothes, light and setting.

The bottom line

A good headshot for a woman is not a softer version of a man's corporate photo. Pick the look by the job you want it to do, keep your real face, hair and age, and avoid any tool that smooths, straightens or removes something you did not ask it to. The evidence points the same way the common sense does: the photo that looks like you on a good day is the one that works.

FAQ

What is the best background color for a woman's headshot? Mid grey, warm cream and white all work; the choice depends on your outfit. Cream flatters warm skin and camel or cream clothing, grey suits navy and jewel tones, white reads modern and suits black. Avoid busy backgrounds and strong colors that tint the skin. Our what to wear guide shows the same outfit on four backdrops.

Should women smile with teeth in a professional headshot? Either works. A closed lip smile reads composed and suits law, finance and executive bios; a smile with teeth reads warm and suits sales, tech, education and anything customer facing. What matters more is that the smile reaches the eyes, because viewers judge trust from the face within 100 milliseconds.

Is a blazer required for a professional headshot? No. A blazer adds structure and suits conservative fields, but a solid jewel tone blouse or a fine knit looks just as professional in most industries, and often more senior. Two of the twelve looks above use no jacket at all.

Should I wear my glasses in my headshot? If you wear them every day, yes, so people recognise you when they meet you. The light just has to be placed high and to the side so the lenses do not reflect it. Our Glasses On style does exactly that.

Can an AI headshot keep my hijab, curls or grey hair? It should, and if it does not, stop using that tool. Our studio keeps any head covering, natural hair texture, grey hair and glasses exactly as they appear in your selfie. Each has a dedicated style and a guide with example photos.

How much does a professional headshot for a woman cost? A studio session usually costs a few hundred dollars once hair, makeup and retouching are added. Here the first set of three is free with a watermark, and paid packs are one time: $9, $19 or $49, with no subscription.

Which headshot look is best for LinkedIn? Jewel Tone Studio, Soft Studio Cream and Window Light Office hold up best in the small LinkedIn circle, because the face is well lit and one clear color separates you from the background. See ten real examples in our LinkedIn photo guide for women.

Are the women on this page real? No. Every woman pictured is fictional and AI generated, created from a fictional starting selfie so we could show every look on one face. Your own headshots are generated from your own photo.
