Quick answer
Upload a square photo of 1024 x 1024 pixels as a JPG under 2 MB, with your face centered and some space above your head, and it will look sharp in Slack, Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Discord and WhatsApp. Only Slack publishes exact pixel limits: at least 512 x 512 and no larger than 1024 x 1024. Zoom limits the file to 2 MB in JPG, PNG or GIF. Teams, Discord and WhatsApp do not publish a pixel size, and they all crop the photo to a circle.

Profile Picture Size for Slack, Zoom, Teams, Discord and WhatsApp: What Each App Actually Publishes
Most size guides give an exact pixel number for every app. For work apps, most of those numbers are invented: only one of the five apps below publishes pixel limits. Here is what each one actually states, checked against its own help pages, and the single upload that works everywhere.
The short answer
| App | Official pixel size | File limit | Shape shown | What to upload |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Slack | At least 512 x 512, at most 1024 x 1024 | Not stated | Rounded square or circle depending on view | 1024 x 1024 JPG |
| Zoom | Not published | 2 MB, JPG, PNG or GIF | Circle | 1024 x 1024 JPG under 2 MB |
| Microsoft Teams | Not published | Not published | Circle | 1024 x 1024 JPG |
| Discord | Not published | Not stated in help center | Circle | 1024 x 1024 JPG or PNG |
| Not published | Not published | Circle | 1024 x 1024 JPG |

Why one 1024 pixel square works everywhere
- It sits at Slack's ceiling. Slack accepts up to 1024 x 1024, the strictest published limit of the five.
- It stays under Zoom's 2 MB cap as a JPG at normal quality. A 1024 pixel headshot is usually a few hundred kilobytes.
- It is sharp on high density screens. Avatars display small, but phones and laptops render them at two or three times the pixel density.
- It survives the circle crop in Zoom, Teams, Discord and WhatsApp, and Slack's rounded square, if your face is centered with a little space above your head.
App by app
Slack
Slack's help center states the photo must be at least 512 x 512 pixels and no larger than 1024 x 1024. Its developer documentation for the users.setPhoto method gives the same bounds. If your Slack email matches a Gravatar account, Slack shows your Gravatar until you upload a photo of your own.
Zoom
Zoom's upload dialog asks for a JPG, JPEG, GIF or PNG file smaller than 2 MB, then lets you crop it. Zoom does not publish a pixel size. Profile photos are usually changed in the Zoom web portal under your profile, which is why many people cannot find the option in the desktop app.
Microsoft Teams
Microsoft does not publish a pixel size for Teams profile photos. Two practical points from Microsoft's own community answers: the photo is shown as a small circle, and an administrator can switch off photo changes through a mailbox policy, in which case no upload will work and you need IT to change it.
Discord
Discord's help center does not publish an avatar pixel size. The avatar is shown as a circle in chat and a larger circle on your profile card. A square 1024 pixel upload covers both.
WhatsApp does not publish a pixel size for profile photos. The app shows the photo as a circle in chats and lets you view it full screen, so a square 1024 pixel image looks sharp in both places.
Framing for the circle crop
| Do | Avoid |
|---|---|
| Face centered, eyes a little above the middle | Face at the edge of the frame |
| About 10% space above the hair | Cutting off the top of the head |
| Shoulders inside the circle | Wide shots where the face is tiny |
| One solid color behind you | Busy backgrounds that compete at small size |
| Even light on the face | Backlight from a window behind you |
Preview the circle before you upload with our circle cropper, and export the square at the right size with the profile picture resizer.
Use the same photo in every work app
Colleagues see you in Slack, then on a Zoom or Teams call, then in an email. One consistent photo across all of them makes you easier to recognise and is the simplest thing a remote team can do to put faces to names. If your company uses a shared look on its team page, match it.
The bottom line
Export one square photo at 1024 x 1024 pixels, save it as a JPG under 2 MB, center your face with a little room above your head, and use it in Slack, Zoom, Teams, Discord and WhatsApp. Treat any guide that quotes an exact "official" pixel size for Teams, Discord or WhatsApp with caution: those apps do not publish one.
FAQ
What size should a Slack profile picture be? Slack requires at least 512 x 512 pixels and no more than 1024 x 1024. Upload a 1024 x 1024 square for the sharpest result.
What size is a Zoom profile picture? Zoom does not publish a pixel size. Its upload dialog requires a JPG, PNG or GIF smaller than 2 MB. A 1024 x 1024 JPG fits easily.
What size should a Microsoft Teams profile picture be? Microsoft does not publish a pixel size for Teams. A square 1024 x 1024 JPG works. If uploading is blocked, your administrator may have turned off photo changes.
What is the Discord profile picture size? Discord's help center does not publish one. Upload a square image of 1024 x 1024 pixels with your face centered; it is shown as a circle.
What size is a WhatsApp profile picture? WhatsApp does not publish a pixel size. A square 1024 x 1024 photo looks sharp in the circle in chats and when viewed full screen.
Why is my profile picture blurry in Slack or Zoom? Usually because the original was small or heavily compressed. Start from the largest version you have, crop it square and export at 1024 x 1024.
Can I use the same profile photo in every work app? Yes, and you should. A single 1024 x 1024 square under 2 MB meets every published limit across these five apps.

A square 1024 x 1024 pixel JPG under 2 MB works as a profile photo in Slack, Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Discord and WhatsApp; Slack is the only one of the five that publishes pixel limits (512 x 512 minimum, 1024 x 1024 maximum), and Zoom caps the file at 2 MB.
