Quick answer
A good AI headshot keeps your hijab exactly as you wear it: the same color, fabric, wrap and coverage of hair, ears and neck. Ours does, in every style, and our Hijab Professional style is built around it. For the photo itself, matte jersey or crepe in a solid color photographs better than satin, and a hijab one or two shades away from your top keeps the frame calm. Below are six looks on the same woman, plus the hiring research behind why this matters.

18.8%

AI Headshots With Hijab: Six Professional Looks, Your Hijab Kept Exactly as You Wear It
If you wear a hijab, the first question about any headshot tool is not "will it look professional" but "will it keep my hijab". Some tools restyle, loosen or remove head coverings because their training data rarely shows them. A headshot that does that is not a headshot of you. This page shows what it looks like when a tool gets it right, and what to think about when you choose colors and fabrics.
The starting selfie and six looks
All six photos below were generated from the one phone selfie on the left. The woman is fictional; the hijab is kept as she wore it, and only the color changes where the look calls for a different outfit.

In every one, the wrap, the pin at the side and the full coverage of hair, ears and neck are unchanged. That is the standard to hold any tool to.
What a headshot tool must keep
| Detail | What "kept" means |
|---|---|
| Coverage | Hair, ears and neck covered exactly as in your photo. No hairline showing where yours does not |
| Wrap style | The same drape and tuck: a simple wrap stays simple, a turban style stays a turban style |
| Fabric | Jersey stays jersey, chiffon stays chiffon. The texture should be visible |
| Pins and underscarf | Kept where they are |
| Color | Kept, unless you choose a look that changes the outfit, and then only in a modest, matching way |
| Your face | Skin tone, features and expression unchanged. No lightening, no slimming |
Our studio applies this to every photographic style, not just one: if your selfie shows a hijab or any other religious head covering, it is kept. The Hijab Professional style adds a calm cream backdrop, soft front light that shows the fabric texture without shine, and a structured outfit that coordinates with the hijab. If your selfie shows no head covering, Hijab Professional will not add one.
Colors and fabrics that photograph well
Fabrics. Matte fabrics photograph best: jersey, crepe, cotton voile and matte chiffon. Satin and silk with a sheen catch studio light as bright streaks, which the eye reads as glare. A slightly textured fabric gives the photo depth.
Colors. The hijab frames your face more closely than any collar, so its color matters more than the color of your top.
| Hijab color | Pairs well with | Backdrop |
|---|---|---|
| Navy | Light blue, white, cream, grey | Light grey, white |
| Black | Charcoal, white, camel | Cream, light grey (avoid charcoal) |
| Dusty rose, mauve | Cream, ivory, grey | Cream |
| Emerald, teal | Black, navy, cream | Mid grey |
| Beige, sand, camel | Camel, white, olive | Outdoor, cream |
| Burgundy | Cream, grey, navy | Light grey |
Two rules make almost any combination work: keep the hijab and top one or two shades apart so they do not merge, and avoid a backdrop the same tone as the hijab. A black hijab on a charcoal backdrop loses its outline the same way a black blazer does.
Patterns. A small, low contrast print is fine. A large or busy print competes with your face in a frame this tight. Solid colors are the safe choice for LinkedIn and CVs.
Why this matters: what the hiring research found
This is not a cosmetic issue. Two field experiments measured how employers respond to applicants who wear a headscarf.
Germany, 1,474 applications. Doris Weichselbaumer sent applications from three fictional women with identical qualifications: one with a German name, one with a Turkish name, and the same Turkish named applicant photographed wearing a headscarf. The same model appeared in all the photos.
| Applicant | Callback rate | Applications needed for one callback, relative to the German name |
|---|---|---|
| German name, no headscarf | 18.8% | 1.0x |
| Turkish name, no headscarf | 13.5% | 1.4x |
| Turkish name, headscarf | 4.2% | 4.5x |
For chief accountant roles the gap was larger still: 27.3% against 3.6%, about 7.6 times as many applications for the same result. The study was published in the ILR Review in 2020.
United States. Sonia Ghumman and Ann Marie Ryan sent confederates into stores and restaurants to ask about jobs, some wearing a hijab and some not. Women wearing a hijab received fewer callbacks and were less often allowed to complete an application, and the gap was larger where the existing staff was less diverse (Human Relations, 2013).
What this means for a headshot:
- The decision to show your hijab is yours. A tool that removes it is making that decision for you, in a context where it has real consequences.
- Discrimination is the employer's problem, not yours. The research documents a bias; it does not suggest hiding. Many women choose to apply where their presentation is welcome from the first screen.
- Where a CV photo is expected, as in Germany, the photo is part of the application. Make it a professional one, and make it you.
Hijab and official ID photos
For passports and ID, rules differ from professional headshots. The UK passport guidance, for example, says your photo must not have a head covering unless it is worn for religious or medical reasons, and your full face must be visible. AI generated images, including ours, are not accepted for passports or government ID anywhere; they need an unedited photograph. Our passport photo tool checks size and framing for a real photo you take yourself.
How to take the selfie
- Wear the hijab exactly as you wear it to work, pinned the way you like it. The studio copies what it sees.
- Face a window. Soft daylight from the front shows the fabric texture and your face evenly.
- Phone at eye level, arm's length or further. Keep the whole hijab in frame, including the top of the head.
- Plain top underneath. A crew neck or simple blouse; the style provides the outfit.
- Generate, then check the wrap. If any result changes the coverage or the wrap, do not use it. With the free set you can check before you pay anything.
The bottom line
A professional headshot with a hijab should look like you on a working day: the same hijab, the same wrap, the same coverage, in a color that frames your face. Matte fabrics and solid colors photograph best. Choose a tool that keeps your hijab exactly, in every style, and treat any tool that does not as disqualified.
FAQ
Will an AI headshot generator remove my hijab? Some tools restyle or remove head coverings. Ours keeps any religious head covering exactly as it appears in your selfie, in every photographic style. Hijab Professional never adds a head covering to a selfie that has none.
What color hijab is best for a professional headshot? Solid, mid to deep colors: navy, black, emerald, burgundy, dusty rose and beige all photograph well. Keep the hijab one or two shades away from your top and choose a backdrop in a different tone from the hijab.
Which hijab fabric looks best in photos? Matte fabrics such as jersey, crepe, cotton voile and matte chiffon. Shiny satin or silk reflects studio light as bright streaks that read as glare.
Can I wear a hijab in my passport photo? In many countries, yes, when it is worn for religious reasons and your full face is visible. The UK guidance says so explicitly. Check your own country's rules, and use a real, unedited photograph: AI images are not accepted for ID.
Does wearing a hijab affect job callbacks? Field research says it can. In a German experiment of 1,474 applications, the same applicant wearing a headscarf got callbacks 4.2% of the time against 18.8% for a German named applicant without one. That is a bias in employers, not a reason to change how you present.
Can men keep a kufi or turban in AI headshots? Yes. The studio keeps any religious head covering, including kufi, turban, yarmulke and tichel, exactly as in the selfie.
Is there a free way to test this? Yes. Your first set of three headshots is free and needs no signup, so you can check that the wrap and coverage are kept before paying anything.
