What the rules actually say

Nigeria's 51 × 51 mm (2 × 2 inch) passport photo is unusual for Africa — most other African countries use the global 35 × 45 mm standard. Nigeria adopted the US format in 2007 when the e-passport launched, partly because of high US visa application volume from Nigerian applicants. The same photo file works for both applications.

Applications run through passport.immigration.gov.ng — online initiation, in-person biometric capture at any NIS (Nigeria Immigration Service) office. Standard processing is 3-6 weeks; expedited service is available at major centres for an additional fee.

Pure white background is required. Nigerian photo studios charge NGN 1,500-5,000 for compliant 51 × 51 mm photos. Many studios cluster around NIS offices in Lagos, Abuja, and Port Harcourt and offer 5-minute printing.

From abroad — particularly the US (3 million Nigerian diaspora), UK, Canada, and the Gulf states — Nigerian embassies and High Commissions process applications through the same NIS system. The 51 × 51 mm photo specification applies worldwide.

Privacy: what we do with your photo

The Nigeria passport photo maker runs entirely in your browser. Cropping, scaling, and background colour replacement happen on your device using the Canvas API. The background-removal step uses our private worker server, processes the image in memory only, and deletes it immediately after returning the cutout — no logs, no storage, no training data.

Questions, answered

Nigeria Passport Photo Maker — frequently asked questions

Why does Nigeria use the US 2 × 2 inch format?

Nigeria adopted the US 51 × 51 mm format in 2007 when the e-passport launched, partly for ICAO compatibility and partly because many Nigerian applicants also apply for US visas (which use the same format). The same photo works for both applications.

What's the difference between the 32-page and 64-page Nigerian passport?

Same photo specification. The 64-page version costs more and lasts the same 10 years — useful for frequent travellers who'd fill the 32-page version before expiry.

Where do I apply for a Nigerian passport in Lagos?

At any Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) office — there are 4 in Lagos and dozens across other states. Online application initiation is required through passport.immigration.gov.ng.

Can I renew my Nigerian passport abroad?

Yes, at any Nigerian embassy or High Commission. Same 51 × 51 mm photo. Major missions in the US, UK, Canada, and the Gulf states handle high diaspora volume.

Are smiles allowed?

No. Neutral expression with closed mouth required for biometric verification.
