A German passport photo (Biometrisches Passfoto) is 35 × 45 mm with the head 32-36 mm from chin to crown and a uniform light grey background — typically #EFEFEF or lighter. Pure white is technically allowed but biometric scanners at the Bürgerbüro prefer grey. JPG, taken within six months. Fully ICAO 9303-compliant.

What the rules actually say

Germany takes its biometric photo specification more seriously than most EU countries. The Bundesdruckerei (the federal printing office that produces all German passports and ID cards) publishes a detailed guide called the Musterbild showing exactly what acceptable photos look like — light grey background, head 32-36 mm from chin to crown, eyes on the horizontal centerline of the photo, mouth closed, no shadows on the wall behind.

Every Bürgerbüro (city services office) has a calibrated biometric photo station that costs €6-€8 and produces an instantly-compliant digital photo transmitted directly to Bundesdruckerei. If you bring your own photo, it must be printed at 3.5 × 4.5 cm exactly — even a 1 mm deviation triggers rejection at the counter.

The pure-white-background trap catches a lot of US applicants who don't realise Germany prefers light grey. The system is technically permissive about white, but the automated quality check at Bundesdruckerei rejects too-high-contrast backgrounds for biometric edge detection. Light grey (#E6E6E6 to #EFEFEF) passes every time.

Same-day passport service exists (Express, +€32) but requires a complete and compliant application — including the photo. If your Express photo is rejected at intake, you forfeit the express fee and start over with a 3-week standard processing window. Get the photo right the first time.

Top reasons Germany passport photos get rejected

  • Background not light grey or off-white — coloured backgrounds are always rejected
  • Head height under 32 mm (too small) or over 36 mm (too close)
  • Shadows on the chin from overhead lighting
  • Eyes not on the horizontal centerline of the photo
  • Smile, raised eyebrows, or any non-neutral expression

Privacy: what we do with your photo

The Germany passport photo maker runs entirely in your browser. Cropping, scaling, and background colour replacement happen on your device using the Canvas API. The background-removal step uses our private worker server, processes the image in memory only, and deletes it immediately after returning the cutout — no logs, no storage, no training data.

Questions, answered

Germany Passport Photo Maker — frequently asked questions

Is a Bewerbungsfoto (job application photo) the same as a Passfoto?

No. Bewerbungsfotos are styled portraits (suit, expression, sometimes warmer tones). Passfotos are biometric — neutral expression, light grey background, strict head positioning. Don't confuse the two — using a Bewerbungsfoto for a passport will be rejected.

Do German Bürgerbüros take the photo for me?

Most Bürgerbüros have an automated PointID or Biometriebild station for €6 — the photo is digital, transmitted directly to Bundesdruckerei. You can also bring your own printed photo (5 × 5 cm or 3.5 × 4.5 cm) that meets the spec.

What's the difference between Personalausweis photo and Reisepass photo?

Identical specifications. The same 35 × 45 mm biometric photo works for both the national ID card (Personalausweis) and the passport (Reisepass). Many people get both updated together to save the €60+ photo round-trip.

Are smiles allowed?

No. Bundesdruckerei specifically calls out 'mund geschlossen, neutraler Gesichtsausdruck' (closed mouth, neutral expression). Even a slight smile changes the cheekbone position enough that biometric matching fails.

Can I use the same photo for my Visa to other Schengen countries?

Yes — German passport photo specifications match the wider Schengen visa standard exactly. The same 35 × 45 mm light-grey-background photo works for any EU/Schengen visa application.
